BIEK VERSTAPPEN

In his atelier located in a warehouse built in 1895 in the center of Amsterdam, Biek Verstappen creates "wearable fabrics" using only natural materials such as silk, bamboo, Angora goat, camel, yak, and some sheep's wool.

Throughout the entire process, from selecting the perfectly curled wool of Wensleydale sheep to dyeing various fibers, she relies solely on her own senses, creating with an awareness of the tranquility, intimacy, happiness and softness she feels through the materials.

What she seeks is to understand the characteristics of each material and make the most of its strengths. By layering various different types of materials, she gives the material depth. Through the dyeing process, each fiber reacts differently to the dye, resulting in a three-dimensional fabric. This expresses her emotions and herself, as well as the unpredictability and drama that only natural materials can have.
